Iraklion, Crete

  Iain...

Lovely night's sleep on restaurant floor for small values of "lovely". Off the ferry by 5:30am and lurk in waiting room for a bit. Talk to a Merkin who went in a second class cabin, and borrow his guide book (complete with useful maps). Eventually Cathy gathers strength to move out of waiting room, and we move out, only to stop just outside the port to vomit. Nice.

We make it to Youth Hostel at about 7am, after meeting a bloke who is trying to persuade us to go there anyway, and stagger in - Cathy goes to sleep on dining room floor. Shortly afterwards, the woman appears, having got out of the wrong side of bed. She accuses us of being there since 5, not being there at 7, breaking and entering and the Turkish invasion of Cyprus. Things go from bad to worse when we attempt to get a room, and we end up walking out shaking the dust from our feet, leaving behind the only rude Greek I've yet met.

Install ourselves at 'Hotel Lena' 50 yards down the road and, after ensuring that 8:00 isn't too early to arrive, Cathy collapses on the bed. I follow suit.

Get up at midday and started exploring. Found lunch - very touristy - and investigated the tourist office. Obtained a Greek Ferry Book of Lart. Wandered down Travel Agent street asking about ferries. Discover that the mention of Turkey is liable to render Travel Agents almost entirely unhelpful.

Went to Iraklion Museum to be bored by pots. Free entrance for students. More Travel Agents, followed by shopping, sleeping and light tea in the hotel room. Phoned home.

  Cathy...

Ill, slept, ill, slept. Don't like today, no energy, very tired. Slowly getting better. Woman in Youth Hostel was a moo-cow. Iain lovely to me. Room far too hot. Boh.
