Fira, Santorini

  Iain...

Spent the night fending off marauding mosquitos. In the morning, we went down to the reception to whinge, and stood in line while the Aussies had a go. The reception bloke was dead evasive. We got a bed and went to the dorm, finding another pair of Australians. They told us that the hostel had been comprehensively done over that night. Whole rucksacks had walked, as had one bloke's 60,000 drachma (about £120).

We then went out and got lost in the town. Cathy was feeling tired and whingey at this point. We had lunch (good price, food and menu) and went to find boat trip tickets. The boat trip started from the port of Fira - down lots of steps. Cathy was unconvinced by the walking idea, so we took the cable car. Dead expensive.

The boat took us to the "Hot Springs" where people went swimming and came out a crusty brown colour. Then we went to the volcano and slept while mad people walked up it. Went back to the hostel and collapsed.

Three hour trip. I slept for 1½ hours, Iain for 2. Very tired. We relaxing in the evening, and slept at 11pm (lights out). It was hard to sleep - we were worried about security. We're both tired to the point of exhaustion and not enjoying the trip much. We hope it will improve, but I have several times already considered giving up and getting a train to Spain, just sitting on a beach for a month. It's hard work, and we think we underestimated the trip.
