Up at 8:00 (although body clock was still on English time). Breakfast of yogurt, bread + cheese and tea. Cathy pinched a ton of bread + cheese for lunch.

[A failed attempt to capture the fantastic public transport system - there really is a tram every three minutes, but by the time we'd got the photo, they'd gone...]

  Cathy...

We walked to the Kunst (art) museum, having left our bags in the Youth Hostel. It wasn't the usual exhibition - some bits we wanted were shut - but some funky Warhol which was weird. We both had achy feet. We tried to get a tram to the Three Countries Corner, but due to my dodgy German we went the wrong way. We found a market to buy next day's lunch in - fairly cheap for once. Ate lunch in a park by the Youth Hostel, waiting for train to Luzern.

1 hour train, funky mountains. We arrived at Luzern 3 pm and got a bus to the Youth Hostel - excellent public transport again. Good place, top floor again, double room, wonderfully. It was supposed to do veggie meals but didn't. Staff deeply unhelpful. Dumped stuff and went back into town.

[Paddle steamer. This is how crap the weather was - see later for an improvement, when the mountains are actually visible.]

Torrential rain, as when we arrived. Took boat down the lake, good views but too cloudy and wet. Got paddle steamer back - Iain very excited by visible engine mechanism, me by mountains. Walked across a nice wooden bridge, over the River Reuss, with paintings of the town's history on, the Kapellbrücke. Saw duck houses on river - strange. We guess it's to protect them from swans.

Couldn't find cheap restaurant - no surprise - ended up in MacDonalds. Still cost £10. Bus back at 9pm. Sat and failed to decide what to do tomorrow. Depends on weather.

[The ducks houses, which protect them from the swans, another example of excessive use of thinking by the Swiss, with the Kapellbrücke behind. ]
Although Switzerland is beautiful, we're certainly paying for the views. This turns out to be our most expensive place, with Austria coming a close second. I doubt I'll ever be able to afford a long holiday here - even budget travel is expensive. We wonder how long the rest of our money is going to last.
