Luzern, Switzerland

[See that tiny frame top left of the mountain? That's a lift, that is, for wimps without vertigo.]

Got up early (despite having a double room) and had breakfast. Smelly cheese and bread again. Didn't steal any this time. Decided not to do Jungfrau as weather still a bit cloudy. Dumped bags in the station (cheaper than bus fares to YH) and got boat trip. Approx £15 each for 5-6 hours to Pilatus.

[The view from Mount Pilatus. Doesn't look very high, but believe me, it's 7000 metres. You can see Lake Lucerne in the background, partly obscured by cloud. Try enlarging.]

Long boat journey over - myriad stops. Scary steep cogwheel train with excellent views up. Kept thinking we couldn't go any further, then we did. ½ hour to near top (7000 ft). Hotel and restaurant at top, plus building site. Ridiculous.

[A worrying descent, which seemed to take forever. We tried not to think about American fighter pilots.]

Climbed a little higher, but cloudy. We had picnic lunch indoors (cold) and then took the cable car down. Big car first, vertical speed reckon 1m/second, steep. Then smaller cars. Took forever - long way. Saw toboggan run which looked cool, but closed due to rain. At the bottom we bought shopping and caught bus back. Unbelievably efficient transport - wonder how they finance it? The trip was well worth it and the views were incredible. Switzerland is a lovely country and a good starting point for our journey.

[We liked this so much we want one. It's a vending machine supermarket, where a little robot fills your basket for you with requested items. Found in the bowels of Lucerne station.]

Train to Interlaken, afternoon/evening. Arrive Grindelwald 8:30pm, missed dinner. Ate bread again! Very scenic, got bored with mountains. Men's choir in town, had a good atmosphere. Youth Hostel up steep hill - hard as my foot was knackered. Shared room with two American girls.

[Singing Swiss blokes in Grindelwald, for the tourists, but still very cool.]
