  Cathy...

We're going into the Dandenong Ranges today, a national park a couple of hours from Ros's. We spent the morning doing laundry, chatting to Ros and planning our road trip.

[Galahs and Rosellas]

It was raining, and chilly when we left at 11.30am, enough to wear fleeces and jackets. We drove through the countryside, fairly English looking, green, with sheep, cows and hills. The gum trees, however, changed this. The Dandenongs opened into a more foresty and hilly area, with dense and lush vegetation - ferns, scrub and varying heights of trees. This is new to us, and is our first view of rainforest. We stop to see some wild birds - rosellas and galahs. Beautiful and striking, these parrots are incredibly colourful and tame - they are used to being fed by visitors. Amazing to see wild birds we're used to seeing in zoos.

[Just to prove we were there]
We drove to Puffing Billy, a restored steam train, and tourists' favourite. It's run by dedicated volunteers, keen on authenticity. The open carriages allow you to sit and dangle your legs from the windows. We have an hour-long journey to a train museum, where we stop for a picnic lunch. Another hour, and we stop for a lakeside walk before waiting for the next train back. The countryside is beautiful, with wonderful plant life, and good views across Victoria.

On the return journey, Iain gets something in his eye, which we can't remove. It's pretty sore and watering. When we get back to Frankston, Ros takes us to a clinic, where a doctor looks at Iain's eye. He inverts the eyelid, which seems to resolve the problem, and he's fine. This costs us AUS$41 (UKP 15) which we can claim on insurance.

[And quite smoky]
We return home briefly, then go out for dinner; Ros's walking club is meeting in Frankston for a social meal in a Greek restaurant. The food is good, and it's the first time we've eaten dinner out in Australia. The people are friendly, and we have a nice evening. Iain collects a quote: "I didn't cause trouble - they were looking for trouble and they bloody well found it" from a guy called Les, who is a spit of a character from the Fast Show. We speak to a woman called Sheila, who is British and has lived all around the world. She likes Australia best, but York comes a close second; she wishes it could be transported. This sounds a fair opinion to me.
